Sweet Home Parent Involvement Task Force
shield.jpgParent Involvement Task Force – Next Meeting March 23, 2010

Each summer the Sweet Home Board of Education participates in a retreat to set goals for the upcoming school year and discuss program improvements. One goal that is adopted every year involves improved communication with all stakeholders in the district, especially parents. In 2003, the Board convened a Task Force on Parental Involvement to study the things the school district was doing well with regard to parental involvement, and to make recommendations for how we could improve in that area. Some of the ideas that came from the 2003 Task Force have proven to be highly effective, such as the “Parent Portal” that allows parents to check grades for middle and high school courses, the redesigned district website, improved newsletters at each of the schools, and the Global Connect automated phone messaging system.

The Board established a goal of reconvening the Parental Involvement Task Force in 2010 in order to revisit the current scope and effectiveness of parental involvement in the district and to determine the best ways to strengthen the connection between the schools and parents. The initial meeting of the Task Force took place on February 22nd, with 30 parents participating. The participants brainstormed a number of things the district currently does to facilitate parental involvement, and more importantly, provided numerous suggestions for ways we can improve our current practices as well as implement new ideas. The Task Force members are using criteria from the PTA National Standards as a framework for evaluating Sweet Home programs.

We know that a key element for making our school district truly exceptional is to maximize communication between home and school that is regular, two-way, and meaningful. We believe the Task Force is a great way to improve our efforts. Our plan is to schedule two more meetings of the Task Force and have the group present formal recommendations to the Board of Education in July. The next meeting of the Parental Involvement Task Force is scheduled for March 23, 2010 at 6:00 pm in the Normal Vergils Community Center. We welcome any community member to join the Task Force and ask that you contact Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, Michael Baumann, at 250-1417 if interested.
