shield.jpg44 SWEET HOME HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS & GRADUATES NAMED AP SCHOLARS

In recognition of their exceptional achievement on college-level Advanced Placement Examinations last May, the College Board has named 44 Sweet Home High School students and graduates AP Scholars.

The distinction, which has several levels of achievement based on success on a number of year-long courses and exams taken, was given to only about 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students who took the AP Examinations nationwide in May 2011.

AP Exams are taken by students each May after completing challenging college-level courses at their high school. They are graded on a 5-point scale with 5 being the highest score. Most of the nation's colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement or both for grades of 3 or higher.

The College Board is a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. It is comprised of more than 5,700 schools, colleges, universities and other educational organizations.

Sweet Home's individual honors:

• Eleven students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. They were Walaa Abdelfadeel, Gabriel Chen, Kristine Ellsworth, Alex Fu, Eric Fu, Amy Grogan, Yekaterina Kukhto, Kaitlynn Olczak, Connor Orrico, Grace Pan and Joshua Reich.

• Ten students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. They were Timothy Anger, Angelina Bruno, Tyler Hayes, Christina Heim, Elizabeth Jasen, Taylor Jones, Kaylee Kaminski, Gillian Nigro, Danica Tibung and Bethany Wolf.

• 23 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher. They were Jesse Alt-Winzig, Danielle Bruch, Joshua Carroll, Laura Ciminelli, Matthew Daddario, Sarah Fiordaliso, Joseph Freiert, Alexandra Hughes, Stephanie Izard, Janelle Johnson, Alyssa Koons, Emily Lambe, Leyla Mamedova, Kristen Milleville, Sarah Phelan-Tiedman, Leonard Ranallo, John Rein, Michele Said, Ryan Scott, Erica Sitek, Joseph Szabo, Taylor Vaughn and Cassie Williams.

District Sets 2011-12 Tax Rates

shield.jpgAt its voting meeting August 23, the Sweet Home Board of Education set the school tax rate for 2011-12.

The School Board approved a 2011-12 property tax levy of $36,339,225 at the voting meeting. The property tax rate established for homeowners in the Town of Amherst is $14.28 per $1,000 assessed value which represents a yearly tax bill of $1,285 for a home assessed at $120,000 with New York State basic STAR exemption which translates to a tax bill increase of $92 from the previous year.  The non-homestead rate for the Town of Amherst will be $22.10 per $1,000 assessed value for 2011-12.

The property tax rate established for homeowners in the Town of Tonawanda is $30.49 per $1,000 assessed value which represents a yearly tax bill of $1,283 for a home assessed at $56,100 with a New York State basic STAR exemption. The non-homestead rate for the Town of Tonawanda will be $47.24 per $1,000 assessed value for 2011-12. The Town of Tonawanda uses an equalized rate to determine assessments.

The tax rates are different than those projected in the 2011-12 budget adoption process primarily because assumptions about assessments have changed. When district officials crafted the budget in early March indications from both municipalities were that assessments would increase by 1 percent overall. Assessment figures were released to the District in August and total assessments decreased by a half percent.
