Committee on Special Education
The Committee on special education reviews all student referrals for special education placement as required by law. This committee is made up of professionals involved with the individual student,the student’s parent as well as a parent representative. The Committee determines the appropriate services for students with academic,emotional,social and/or physical disabilities.Recommendations may include full- or part-time special education services and/or related services such as speech,physical therapy,occupational therapy and counseling.
Committe on Pre-School Special Education
All children with disabilities ages 3-5 are eligible to receive Special Education services as determined by the Committee on Pre-School Education. The Committee is made up of individuals from the school district, the evaluating agency, Erie County, the child’s parent and a parent representative. This committee determines the appropriateness of services for pre-school children, which may include full and half-day center-based programs, integrated programs, speech therapy or occupational and physical therapy.
Consultant Program
For students in regular classes who require special education assistance,Sweet Home provides consultant teacher services. These services can be provided to an individual or to groups and are delivered by a special education teacher in the regular education class. The services can be provided directly to the student or indirectly through the child’s regular education teacher. Services are offered for a minimum of 120 minutes a week.
Special Education Classes
Sweet Home offers more intensive special education support for youngsters with disabilities that interfere with their ability to benefit from regular class placement.
Resource Room Program
Sweet Home provides resource room assistance for some students needing special education assistance at the middle school and enrichment support for students at the high school. Students are assigned to the resource room on a regularly scheduled basis while continuing their other studies in regular classrooms during most of each school day.
